"We need to always seek to do what God wants us to do... but how do we know what God wants us to do? This question is one that is very important to each of us, because we face many decisions and dilemmas every day. And if we choose what God wants, we will be blessed. If we choose to go against God's will, we are "rowing upstream." We find an excellent example of how to "do what God would do" in the situation where the apostles had to choose a replacement for Judas in Acts chapter 1. What we find in their example is basically two steps: 1. PRAY Our normal "mode of operation" when faced with a decision is to "close our eyes, cross our fingers and jump in with both feet." Not a lot of thought, maybe just a "feeling" or an "instinct" and a hope that it'll work out for the best. What we need to do instead is "close our eyes, cross our fingers - all of them (i.e. fold our hands) - and pray." 2. Pray for God to show you the answer to ... "WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?" It's no surprise that when the apostles prayed, they asked for God's guidance in their decision. But they did more than that. They acknowledged that God had already made the decision -he'd already chosen what he wanted them to do. They simply asked him to show them what decision he'd made. In other words, they simply asked God to show them "What Would Jesus Do?" So, when you face a decision, pray. And pray for God to show you the answer to "What Would Jesus Do?" God will show you the answer - there's probably no request he'd rather have his children ask than "Show me what Jesus would do." How does God show us "What Would Jesus Do?" 1. Most often you'll find the answer in Scripture. You won't always find the specific answer (e.g. the Bible won't tell you "Jesus would buy the blue house on the corner lot instead of the white one in the country.") but God's Word will give you the principles with which to make your decision. It's important to be into the Scriptures on a daily basis, It's in God's Word that you really get to know what Jesus would do. 2. As was the case in Acts 1, sometimes God shows us "What Jesus Would Do" in the things that happen in our lives. Our challenge here is to ask God to open our eyes to see the answer he's showing us in the events of our lives, because quite often his answer might not be the same answer as what we are looking for. Follow the disciples' example in making your decisions: Pray. In your prayer ask God to show you the answer to "What Would Jesus Do?" Read God's Word daily. Take note of what God is showing you by the things that happen in your life. Thanks for asking, |
