ASH WEDNESDAY WORSHIP

March 9 @ 7:00 p.m.

Ashes carry a lot of symbolism...

· People in ancient times showed their sorrow over sin and repentant attitude by putting on sackcloth and ashes - sometimes even sitting in the ashes. (Check out the daily readings for March 6 - 12)

· Ashes are a humbling reminder of our mortality. (You may remember hearing the phrase “earth to earth, dust to dust and ashes to ashes” spoken at a burial service.)

· Ashes are dirty and suggest a need for cleansing by the blood of Christ.

During our traditional service of ashes on Ash Wednesday, ashes will be applied to the foreheads of all worshipers in the form of a small cross. This serves to remind us that it was our filthy sin that put Jesus on the cross. But more than that, it reminds us that it was on the cross that the dirt and guilt of our sins were washed away by Jesus’ blood!

Please join us for this traditional Service of Ashes on March 9 at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, March 12, 10-noon

Bridal Shower for Carrie Halliday - bride-to-be of Brent Miller

Sunday, March 13 - Outreach Meeting after worship

LENTEN MIDWEEK DEVOTIONS

Wednesday Evenings, March 16 - April 13

Supper served from..                  5:45 to 6:20

Devotion and prayer from...        6:30 to 7:00

Each week different groups within church will take turns ...

· providing the pre-devotion meal

· picking a couple songs for us to sing

· choosing a service project we can participate in after the devotion  e.g. writing a letter to Heidy; bringing food shelf items; bringing items for the Safe Avenues fundraiser

The group schedule:

March 16: Living Word Elders’ Team

March 23: Confirmation Parents

March 30:  Senior High Study Group

April 6: MMT

April 13: LWML

The Devotions ....

It is traditional to “give something up for Lent” (again, following Jesus’ example of giving up food during the 40 days of temptation). Most often what we “give up” is normally a habit or action. This year our devotions will focus on giving up wrong beliefs (or myths) about God. The myths we are to give up will be chosen by the confirmation students based on chapters they’ve read in the book Don’t Check Your Brains At the Door.  An example is the “Cosmic Cop” myth. The belief that God just sits up there and waits for us to step out of line, so He can “zap” us with some punishment.

Please consider adding our Lenten Midweek Devotions (and supper) to your schedule.

Wednesday Lenten Services
Devotion and Prayer at 6:30   (Supper at 5:45
)
Services are one-half hour with prayer and a devotion.

Each week we focus on one aspect of prayer. On Ash Wednesday we read in the Bible the somewhat shocking revelation that God sometimes refuses to listen to our prayers... until we repent of the sin in our lives. Last week we learned about fasting and how denying yourself can help you to remember to pray. This week we’ll focus on.... (come and find out).

Sunday Services in March
“By His Stripes:   Healing Wounded Relationships”
The Christian life (indeed all human life) is about relationships: Our relationship with God and with each other. Join us each Sunday as we look at something Satan uses to tear down relationships in our lives - and what God gives to heal them.

New Member Sunday—March 7
Those who have completed the LC-MS Beliefs class and wish to join Living Word, along with those transferring from other LC-MS churches will be received into membership during the worship service.  A potluck will be held in their honor following worship.

All Stars for Jesus
Wed.,
March 17:   A fun evening for 3-6th Graders

The Confirmation Students will again assist with Craft and Game time. Pastor will lead the Bible story time.  Rides can be provided and friends can come. Just let us know. We’ll start at 7:00 and conclude by 8:00

Progressive Supper - Coming one weekend in March
Watch for details on the specific date
The Progressive supper is always a fun event and great way to get to know some of the people in the church. We travel from home to home and eat one course of a meal at each place.
Hosts are still needed for the courses.  See Laurel Iverson if you can host.

Palm Sunday / Easter Choir Practice -
Sundays after worship

We meet after worship to practice songs for Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday - April 1
The current plan is to hold a Seder Meal at 6:30 with Lord’s Supper following.

Good Friday - April 2
Tenebrae (service of darkness) Worship @ 7:00 p.m.

Easter  Schedule - Sunday, April 4

· Sonrise Worship: 6:50 a.m.
(Begins outdoors at actual sunrise time)

· Easter Breakfast: 8:00 a.m.

· Easter Egg Hunt   9:00 a.m.

· Worship 10:00 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 7

Youth Ski Trip

Friendship Sunday:  February 14

A great opportunity to invite some friends to come and meet the ultimate Friend: Jesus.

Special Events on Friendship Sunday:

· Worship service celebrating our Greatest Friend - Jesus

· Valentines Brunch after worship - prepared by men of the congregation

· Games for kids after brunch

· Kickoff of our “Secret Paul” prayer partner program

· Kickoff of our “11:09" prayer-a-day program (see below)

Mark your calendars and start praying about friends you can invite. (Special “Friendship Sunday” invitations will be available.)

11:09

On Friendship Sunday we kick-off another special prayer program, one that will have us each praying at the same time every day - 11:09 a.m. - wherever we are. We’re going to choose a slogan that will help us remember to pray. Here are a few that have been offered thus far:

Knees hit the pine at 11:09

B4U Dine - Pray at 11:09

Don’t Whine - Pray at 11:09

Anytime is fine - but we pray at 11:09

Talking to heaven at nine after ‘leven.

Got a better one?  Tell pastor and we’ll add it to the list. Then we’ll pick one on Friendship Sunday.

Ash Wednesday - Feb. 17

         Traditional Service of Ashes

The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Ashes symbolize our frailty, our mortality, humiliation and need for repentance before God (people in ancient times showed their repentance by putting on sackcloth and ashes). Ashes also suggest a need for cleansing by the blood of Christ and renewal by His Holy Spirit.  During our Ash Wednesday service, ashes will be applied to the foreheads of all worshipers in the form of a small cross.   Please join us for our special service, Wednesday, February 17.

As we found out last year, an early service time seems to work better for more people - but maybe just a bit later than 6:00. So this year Lenten services will start at 6:30 with Supper available from 5:45 to 6:20

Each Wednesday @ 6:00  - Prayer Time

“The family that prays together stays together” also holds true for church families. During the Advent season we met for a brief prayer service each Wednesday at 6:00.  Since prayer is such an important part of the life of a church family, we will be continuing this brief prayer service each Wednesday.

Pastor will start each prayer time with a short devotion on a different aspect of prayer. Then we will simply pray - for building issues and anything else you’d like for us to take to the Lord.

A light supper will be available from 5:15 to 6:00, so you can come from work and not worry about supper when you get home - plus it’s a great time of fellowship with your church family. Please join us.

Charter Sunday:  January 24

It has been five years since Living Word was chartered as an official member of the Minnesota North District of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.  We will celebrate with a special potluck meal following worship on January 24.

Make sure to join us as we thank God for our fifth year and kick off year number 6.
