come together for a special joyful celebration of the blessings God has provided

If each of us thanked God for His blessings by giving Him a special
thank-offering of just $2 for each week this past year we could make up most of
our current budget deficit.

Ash Wednesday
Traditional Service of Ashes
The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Ashes symbolize our frailty, our
mortality, humiliation and need for repentance before God (people in ancient
times showed their repentance by putting on sackcloth and ashes). Ashes also
suggest a need for cleansing by the blood of Christ and renewal by His Holy
Spirit. During our Ash Wednesday service, ashes will be applied to the foreheads
of all worshipers in the form of a small cross. Please join us for our special
service,
Wednesday, February 25.
You’ll note that we didn’t list a time for Ash Wednesday worship......
That’s because we’re trying to determine the best time to hold Lenten worship
services. One idea is to have an early start time (6:00 or 6:15 - with a light
supper starting at 5:30) so people can come right after work. Another thought is
to start Confirmation classes earlier and hold worship at 7:00. Please let us
know what would work best for you. Thanks!

A Community Forum About Youth Destructive
Decisions
Maybe you’ve seen the recent article in the WC Tribune that stated 84% of NL-S
seniors have consumed alcohol in the last year (20% higher than the state
average). Those aren’t even the most alarming statistics to come out of the
Minnesota Students Survey that is conducted every three years. The trend is that
area youth (not just NL-S) are participating in other “at-risk” behaviors at an
increasing rate.
NL-S Schools is sponsoring forum for our community about the destructive
decisions youth are making:
Wednesday, May 21, 2008 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
At the NLS High School/Middle School Cafeteria
Lasagne Dinner will be available at 5:15 p.m.
Join us to Learn About:
+ At-risk trends among youth in our community
+ How to talk with your children
+ Possible initiatives to address these problems in our community
NL-S Ministerial and CUE Youth leaders encourage everyone to attend this
information forum and be part of the solution. The purpose of the forum isn’t to
place blame for the problem, but to get the entire community on board to be part
of the solution.

Lenten Midweek Worship 7:30 (Soup Supper: 6:30 -
7:30)
“Learning to Pray from the Master”
Each of the Wednesdays during Lent we take time out for a closer look at the
prayer Jesus gave as we seek to grow in our understanding of the things we
should pray about - and the attitudes we need as we come to God in prayer.
Thus far we’ve learned that prayer includes:
PENITENCE “And forgive us our trespasses....”
PERSONAL CONVERSATION “Our Father who art in heaven”
PRIORITY “Hallowed (holy) be Thy Name”
PURPOSE “Thy Kingdom Come”
Join us this Wednesday at 7:30 as we look at the lessons on praying that are
wrapped up in the words: “Thy Will Be Done...”
Also join us on these days ....
Wednesday March 12: “And lead us not into temptation”
Maundy Thursday: “Give us this day our daily bread”
Good Friday: “Deliver us from the evil one”
Easter Sunday: “For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and
ever. Amen!”

who has ever wondered what to do after someone you know has lost a loved one.
Friday, February 15
Flood Relief Project:
We head to Rushford again to help with rebuilding homes damaged by last summer’s
floods. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us. You will be blessed as
much as the people you will be helping!
(And Not Just For the Guys This Time)
Early in January five guys from Living Word (Kevin Welsh, Bryson Wachter, Allan
Fuglie, Anthony Dauk and Pastor) had an “eye-opening” experience in SE Minnesota
helping rebuild some of the flooded out homes. Nearly half the homes in the town
of Rushford are still unihabited. The people receive little or no money to fix
their flood-damaged homes. (As one person told us, “You have a tornado take your
house - you get a brand new house. You have a flood - you file bankrupcy.”) The
family that owns the house we worked on has been living in a shed since August
and had no hot water until January. That’s not an isolated incident.
In our “quick fix” society we tend to think that everything gets fixed as soon
as the media quits reporting about the disaster. Nothing could be further from
the truth in this case.
We have scheduled another service project for the weekend of February 15-17.
This project is open to guys and gals who want to share the love of Jesus in a
very practical ways and can travel to Rushford Friday evening, February 15.
We’ll put up some sheetrock, and do some painting and staining on Saturday and
Sunday (after worshiping in Rushford) and return home Sunday night. If someone
can’t stay for both days, we’ll have one vehicle return home Saturday evening.
We’ll be staying at “Camp St. Mark’s (The basement of St. Mark’s Lutheran in
Rushford has been converted into a dormitory for workers.) Church members
provide three meals each day. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag, towel and
overnight “stuff”.
Saturday, February 23
Progressive Supper
The Progressive supper is always a fun event and great way to get to know some
of the people in the church. We travel from home to home and eat one course of a
meal at each place.
The Progressive supper is always a fun event and great way to get to know some
of the people in the church. We travel from home to home and eat one course of a
meal at each place. Hosts are still needed for three of the four courses:
1) Appetizers @ 5:00 @ Fuglie’s
2) Soup/Salad @ Dauk’s
3) Main Course @ Church
4) Dessert @ Pam Johnson’s
(Since we finish at Pam’s, if you’d like to car-pool to all the locations, meet
at Pam’s at 4:45 and leave your car there.) Talk to Donna Peterson if you can
attend.
Polar Plunge 2008
Saturday, January 26
We jump in Green Lake to raise funds for Special Olympics
THIS YEAR WE WANT A BIG GROUP, BECAUSE....
We would like to share a Gospel message with the spectators. For example, “For
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have eternal life.” We plan on having each “plunger” (how’s
that for a title?!) wear one word of that Gospel verse on their t-shirt, so we
share the message one word-at-a-time as we take the plunge. So, to use that
verse we’d need 24 people. The fewer the “plungers” the fewer verses we will be
limited to. (e.g. “Jesus wept.” would be our only choice is all we have is two
people)
Sign up by the sanctuary door or talk to Bryson Wachter
Men's Service Project - January 4th & 5th, 2008
We’ll soon be starting a Men’s Group. Our kickoff activity will be a weekend
service project in SE Minnesota helping rebuild some of the flooded out homes.
We plan to travel to Rushford on Friday evening. We’ll put up some sheetrock,
and do some painting and staining on Saturday and return home Saturday night.
We’ll be staying at “Camp St. Mark’s (The basement of St. Mark’s Lutheran in
Rushford has been converted into a dormitory for workers.) Church members will
provide three meals for us on Saturday.
We have tentatively scheduled this Service Project for the first weekend in
January (Friday, Jan 4 - Sat, Jan 5). Please let Pastor or Kevin Welsh know if
you can make the trip with us. It will be a fun time as well as an opportunity

Thanksgiving Eve Worship
A Special Thank-Offering Will Be Collected
God commanded the Israelites to come to the temple once a year for a joyful
celebration of the blessings God provided in the harvest. This harvest festival
was called The Feast of Weeks.
Then celebrate the Feast of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill
offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you.
Deuteronomy 16:10
In keeping with the example of the Israelites, this Thanksgiving Eve we will
come together for a special joyful celebration of the blessings God has provided
us. Each of us will be encouraged to bring a special freewill offering in
proportion to how God has blessed us this past year.
If each of us thanked God for His blessings by giving Him a special
thank-offering of just $1 for each week this past year we could make up most of
our current budget deficit. If we each thanked God by giving back just $2 for
each week of blessings we’d be able to wipe out our deficit - with some left
over for special outreach projects in December.
Please pray about your Thank-offering proportion. Use the special Thank-offering
envelope when you come on Thanksgiving Eve. If you aren’t able to be here that
Wednesday, you can give your Thank-Offering either the Sunday before or after
Thanksgiving.
"But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as
generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what
comes from your hand.” King David in 1 Chronicles 29:14
Bell Ringer Outreach
Saturday, December 8th
The Salvation Army would like our assistance in taking a turn at bell-ringing.
The Salvation Army Christmas kettle has been a familiar part of the Christmas
scene in America for over 100 years! It is their major fund raising effort for
the year and is crucial to their ability to continue serving the needs of
Kandiyohi County. Not only does it support the special seasonal projects such as
food baskets and toys for low income families, but it enables the Salvation Army
to provide assistance to area families throughout the year.
We plan on ringing at the Green Lake Mall. Saturday, December 8. Please sign up
to take a turn at ringing for an hour or two on the sheet in the back.
LWML Sponsors Child Care While You Shop
Saturday, December 1, from 11:00 - 4:00
In an effort to give families with young kids a time to go Christmas shopping
without the kids, the women of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (and
Living Word youth) will offer free child care on December 1.
We will serve lunch and a snack in the afternoon, but we have room for only 20
kids, so sign up right away.
Invite Someone to the Annual Mexican Fiesta
Dinner
Saturday, OCTOBER 20
This is not only a fund raiser for our new building, it can also be a great
outreach tool. Buy a bunch of tickets and give them to your friends and
neighbors. Get your tickets today. Thanks
Halloween “ Trunk or Treat ? ”
This year, we will again be doing this Halloween outreach on October 31st.
Load up your trunk (or pickup or minivan) with the candy you would normally give
away at your door on Halloween. Bring your vehicle full of candy to the church.
We will park our vehicles in a semi-circle in the parking lot at the Spicer mall
and the trick-or-treaters can come to one central location and go from “trunk to
trunk” instead of house to house. We will plan this along with the Spicer
business’ candy-giveaway.
Please let Bryson Wachter know if you can participate in this outreach. We’ll
get you more details as we get closer to Halloween.
Help Deliver Smoke Detector Batteries
Saturday, November 3rd we will be giving away batteries for smoke detectors..
People are always reminded to replace their smoke detector batteries each year.
We do this outreach every year at the start of Daylight Savings Time.
So, we will share the love of Jesus in a practical way by taking batteries
around to the homes in our area from 11:00 to 1:00 that day. We’ll also leave
them a magnet reminder that God sent us Jesus to save us eternally.
Please join us at church at 11:00am for this special outreach.
CTI Music Ministries (Carpenter’s Tools
International)
September 30 @ Living Word
A music team from CTI Music Ministries, an international music ministry, will be
leading worship music at Living Word on Sunday, Sept. 30, during the 10:30
worship service.
Team Members Include:
Brooke Pearson (New London, MN) Vocals
Joe Lee (Flushing, NY) vocals/keys
Vanita Jones (Dillsburg, PA) Guitar/vocals
Joe Gomez (San Francisco, CA) (Guitar/vocals)
Matt Duncan (Jacksonville, IL) drums
Laura Schuh (Woodbridge, IL) bass guitar/vocals
Rebekah Fleck (Lancaster, KY) sound tech/team leader
CTI Music Ministries has been sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the
gifts of music, drama, and personal testimonies for over 30 years all over the
world. Currently, here in the United States, two teams are traveling to
churches, schools, colleges, prisons, and other locations sharing these gifts
and their stories of overseas ministry; challenging others to a greater
awareness and involvement in missions. During the musicians one-year commitment,
they also raise support and recruit other young musicians to join our short-term
music teams that minister during the summer with established Christian
ministries worldwide.
CTI brings the joy of worship and the excitement of missions together in a
concert of modern music and relevant testimonies of the work God is doing here
and abroad. One pastor observed, “What an amazing mirror of Christ’s love that
was shining in our midst.”
At CTI, we are mobilizing musicians passionate about sharing the Gospel of Jesus
Christ.
There will be an opportunity for interested musicians (ages 16-30) to audition
for a summer or full-time team after the worship service.
Praying as a Community: Human Prayer Chain
There is Power in Prayer! Do you believe that? Do you know that the top two
killers of our youth are alcohol and drug related accidents and suicide. As you
read this, there is someone in our community who is in need of prayer. The CUE
(Churches Uniting Everyone) needs your help.
On October 7th, 2007 at 3:30 pm, we are going to make a human Prayer Chain along
the bike path between New London and Spicer. Our goal is to spiritually and
physically unite our two communities in prayer. This afternoon of prayer will
also contain a prayer in unison at 4:06.
Please mark this date on your calendar. Watch for upcoming details in the Lakes
Area Review and your church publications.
Sunday School Kicks Off September 9 !

time playing (or attempting to the best you can) softball. This will be a co-ed,
non-competitive, fun time - including food.
What we’d like you to do: Put together a team from among your friends or your
neighborhood. (This is a great opportunity to invite some folks who don’t have a
church home) Or just tell us that you will come, and we’ll find a group of
people you can become a team with.
If there is enough interest, we may do this a few more times in the late summer
and fall.
Sunday, July 8 - 6:00 p.m. at the Spicer ball fields.
Pray for the Synod as it meets in Convention in
Houston on July 14-19
Elder Duane Hansen is the lay representative to the convention from our circuit.
Please keep Duane and all the delegates in your prayers as they choose a
president and decide on resolutions that will guide our synod the coming three
years.
Take the “POLAR PLUNGE”
Saturday, January 27
We jump in Green Lake to raise funds for Special Olympics
THIS YEAR WE WANT A BIG GROUP, BECAUSE....
We would like to share a Gospel message with the spectators. For example, “For
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have eternal life.” We plan on having each “plunger” (how’s
that for a title?!) wear one word of that Gospel verse on their t-shirt, so we
share the message one word-at-a-time as we take the plunge. So, to use that
verse we’d need 24 people. The fewer the “plungers” the fewer verses we will be
limited to. (e.g. “Jesus wept.” would be our only choice is all we have is two
people)
Sign up by the door to the sanctuary or talk to Bryson Wachter
Secret Paul Prayer Program Kick Off

card (more are available by the mailboxes at church) and place it in the special
walnut “Secret Paul” box on the ushers’ table. We need all the information cards
by Sunday, January 14, so we can pair people up.

The Operation Christmas Child
Shoe Boxes have to be at church by November 12, when we will have a Dedication
Sunday where the children will bring the shoe box to the front of the church and
pray over the gifts that are collected.
Pray for the people who pack them and those who deliver them and for the hurting
children who will receive them.
To help cover shipping and other costs enclose a check for $7.00 in a envelope
and place it on top of the gift items so it is clearly visible.
Checks should be made to “Samaritan’s Purse” and write “occ” on the memo line.
Place a rubber band around your shoe box and lid.
Benefit for Kristina Scholl
We are planning a special benefit fundraiser to help the Scholls with the costs
they’ve incurred during Kristina’s hospitalization. The benefit will be

that.” when someone from the Benefit Committee asks you. Thanks! Supplemental
Funds are being applied for through the Kandihohi County Chapter of Thrivent
Financial for Lutherans.

Halloween “ Trunk or Treat ? ”
This is a Halloween outreach idea we will be hosting this year on October 31st.
Load up your trunk (or pickup or minivan) with the candy you would normally give
away at your door on Halloween. Bring your vehicle full of candy to the church.
We will park our vehicles in a semi-circle in the parking lot at church and the
trick-or-treaters can come to one central location and go from “trunk to trunk”
instead of house to house. We will plan this along with the Spicer business’
candy-giveaway.
We will also have special Christian items available for the trick or treaters.
There will also be prizes (leftover candy?) for the best decorated trunk.
Please let Bryson Wachter know if you can participate in this outreach. We’ll
get you more details as we get closer to Halloween.
Help Deliver Smoke Detector Batteries
Before going to sleep Saturday night, October 28 we will all turn our clocks
back one hour. People are always reminded to replace their smoke detector
batteries each year on “turn your clock back” day. But many (most?) don’t
remember to do that. So, we will share the love of Jesus in a practical way by
taking batteries around to the homes in our area from 11:00 to 1:00 that day.
We’ll also leave them a magnet reminder that God sent us Jesus to save us
eternally.
Please join us at church at 11:00am for this special outreach.

finalized yet (like will we have food or not), but we do know that we will be
starting at 6:30 each Wednesday.
Games will include: Volleyball, softball, basketball, etc...

With Jason Gray
Jason writes music for the heart, mind, and spirit. Crafting powerful metaphors
that lead the listener to discover how marriage is a dance, how God's word is a
love letter, and how hope is like a small town off the beaten path, he writes
unforgettable and intimate songs that are at once simple and profound. His love
for music of all kinds is evident as he moves from pop to folk to rock to soul,
letting disparate elements mingle and make a unique and unified whole – all
anchored to his expressive guitar and voice. “When you think of the best
Christian singer/songwriters, which names come to mind?” Crosswalk.com writes.
“Jennifer Knapp. Bebo Norman. Sara Groves. And Jason Gray… Gray’s work is strong
enough to garner mention alongside some of Christian music's finest.”

Help Build the "Habitat for Humanity" House in
New London
Gary Laugerstedt and Jerry Johnson, co-site supervisors for the New London build
have scheduled volunteer building times as follows:
Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and
Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. by appointment.
A few Saturdays are also available by appointment.
The building is right on schedule, so the footings are in and the wood
foundation in place. We are asking that if you are bringing a group from your
church, you ask someone to provide a snack break for the workers as part of your
contribution. Thank you.
The church pledges and contributions are also on schedule. We have $9,000
pledged from 5 churches and paid contributions of just under $1,000. To qualify
for the Thrivent grant of $60,000 the remainder needs to be paid before November
1. Funds should be sent to: Sherry Myers, Thrivent Specialist, 304 Becker Ave.
Willmar, MN, 56201. Remember that all funds are tithed to builds in Central
America for another house - that's a two-fer.
I want to reassure everyone that this will be a most grateful family, despite
the negative press. I am aware that the task may be somewhat more difficult
because of it. I am reminded of Gary Broman's remark in a similar situation a
few years ago. He said, "Our job is to show God's love in our lives". The master
builders are out there in the most miserable weather showing God's love and
joking and ribbing each other to boot. If you ever need a lift, stop out there
at the work site, at 312 3rd Avenue in New London on Tuesday and Thursday
mornings. Be prepared to be handed a hammer and be uplifted.
Julie Joplin, Habitat Coordinator
We’d like to get a work crew together to help with this house. Please talk to
Pastor David if you can help or if you can organize a work crew.
